COME CREATE WITH US VILLAGE HAIR presents its eponymous inaugural exhibition, “VILLAGE HAIR,” an All Voices Group Art Show about hair and how it braids together all the strands of identity, pride, and power in our community. To introduce VILLAGE HAIR to the community, this Open Call Art Show welcomes all artists, community members, and collectors to enter. Come create with us.
COMBING THROUGH HISTORY Protective hairstyles and upkeep demand time and resources, so access and choices are tangled up with factors like race, gender, social class, and economic privilege. This disproportionately impacts our Black community members, whose hair is targeted for discrimination at work and school and then appropriated as a fashion statement. The CROWN Act prohibits racial hair discrimination in 27 states, but 23 still perpetuate restrictive Eurocentric standards that reinforce inequality and limit personal identity.
ABOUT THE GALLERY Opening November 1st, VILLAGE HAIR is a volunteer-run cooperative art gallery curated to catalyze culturally relevant conversations. VILLAGE HAIR supports the nonprofit Village at Ithaca’s youth-driven programs by amplifying its advocacy and opening our doors to new creative possibilities.
