Diane Newton: Drawings
Diane Newton says: artmaking is about discovery—on the part of both the artist and the viewer. When I make a drawing, I set out to make something I haven’t quite seen before and when it’s done, I share it with others to offer them a new visual experience. I am attracted to landscape because of elements that have the potential to appear mysterious—shapes and colors of land and sky, light and dark and mood can configure into something both visually and psychologically provocative.
Around thirty years ago, Diane came to Ithaca from the Midwest where was born and raised and went to art school. She credits her travels in the Midwest—Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and surrounding states—for her attraction to landscape—the lay of the land, so to speak.
You really can see the lay of the land there, she says, and usually the horizon—where land meets sky. “While it’s often subtle and different than the drama of a Maine seacoast or an Adirondack vista, the Midwestern landscape offers drama in gently sloping hills punctuated with a solitary tree or roadside sign amid stark surroundings. I look at my current surroundings here in the East with that same sensibility.”
Diane thanks Suzanne Loesch for the opportunity to exhibit in her beautiful store. She has also shown work at State of the Art, Corners Gallery, The Gallery at South Hill, the Community School of Music and Art in Ithaca.
