Before I started painting, I considered myself a sculptor. I loved the texture and form of a 3-dimensional work. So I started experimenting with various media, combining it with both acrylic and oil-based paints. I love finding new materials to add and ways to attach them to the canvas. I even change up the tools I use for application, including putting my hands directly in the paint.
I create abstract works with recognizable shapes, which I feel creates a story for the viewer that is all their own, while having a dialogue with me, the artist.
I work with marginalized individuals struggling with trauma, substance use, housing & food insecurity, and various other hardships. My art is an impressionistic reflection of some of the experiences that they have shared with me. I transform the pain and suffering into something else - a colorful, complicated realization.
I’m lucky to call Ithaca, New York my home. I have so many opportunities to be inspired by the natural world. For me, creating art is a necessity rather than a hobby or craft. It’s a response to the connections I have with all that surrounds me.
