Yamilka Portorreal: Aging Ithacans

Yamilka Portorreal (she/they) is a multimedia artist born and partially raised in Dominican Republic [DR] and is currently based in Ithaca. Their current work, “Aging Ithacans,” features portraits and interviews with Tompkins County elders and amplifies the experiences of diverse individuals, particularly in race, ethnicity, religion, and sexuality.

“This project took root in a conversation I had with my grandmother in the Dominican Republic regarding the social and technological changes that occurred during her lifetime and my desire to connect with local seniors,” said Portorreal.

The elders featured in “Aging Ithacans” include McGraw House residents and Lifelong members. Portorreal sketched the portraits and conducted interviews on site. Participants are welcome to keep their framed portraits at the conclusion of the exhibit.

“Aging Ithacans” was made possible with funding administered by the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County.
